What is a 4 x 4 Service?
A 4 x 4 service is another name for a regular service which is specific for 4WD cars. The mechanic working on the job will operate on the car differently to a regular car. Within this Car Service, there are multiple main jobs completed to make sure the 4WD drives safely, including:
- Changing the engine oil and inspecting the engine filter
- Transfer case draining and refilling of clean fluid
- Front differential and rear differential fluid replacement
- Inspection of the auto transmission system if the car is an automatic 4WD
- Manual transmission system inspected if it is a manual 4WD
- Inspections of the air filter, fuel filter, braking system and belts
- Tyre pressure is inspected and altered if too low or high
- Inspecting every light and the wipers
- Topping up of fluids, including battery, brake, power steering, clutch, windscreen washers and radiator
- Looking over the operating conditions of each system overall
- Performing driving tests to make sure the 4WD drives correctly
Transfer Case
This system works to provide power to the wheels transferring it from the engine. This system also has a specific fluid which will need to be replaced and topped up frequently. Each 4WD will have different intervals for when this fluid will need to be worked on.
Servicing the transfer case is also important to make sure the seal is tight. If the seal is loose then transmission fluid can enter the system, causing costly damages. If the cases have an electric motor these might become corroded where maintenance will help prevent this concern.
Front and Rear Differentials
These important systems which help with more control with steering should be inspected regularly. 4WD rely on these so making sure that the fluid is topped up and parts are functioning correctly is needed. Proper lubricant specific to the system will also need to be applied to the differentials.
Brake Lines
The braking system is extra important in 4WD cars which is why services are important ot make sure they are inspected. From snow, wet conditions, rocky places to sand, the brakes help keep the car controlled driving in these environments. The brake lines will need to be inspected for corrosion, while ant-corroding sprays will be applied with special grease.
How Often Should I Service My 4WD?
A 4WD will need to undergo 4WD servicing to make sure that the car drives safely, efficiently and properly. Scheduled maintenance tasks are recommended to keep the vehicle serviced regularly and help prevent major issues. A general service interval for 4WD is every 10,000 – 15,000km driven and at times it is recommended to have the service more frequently.
How Much Does it Cost to Service 4WD?
Each 4WD will cost different to service and repair, depending on the model and year number. How much time it has been since the last service interval to how much the car has been driven can also influence costs. Below is a guide on how much it may cost for a 4WD service:
4WD Model | Service Interval
Land Rover Discovery | 16,000km or every 9 months
Toyota Landcruiser | 10,000km or every 6 months
Volkswagen Amarok | 15,000km or every 12 months
Mitsubishi Pajero | 15,000km or every 12 months
Jeep Grand Cherokee | 10,000km or every 6 months |
What is a 4WD Repair?
If the 4WD has experienced an issue a qualified mechanic will perform 4WD repairs to resolve the problem. There are multiple Car Repair tasks performed during 4WD repairs, the most common types of repairs are:
- Shock Absorbers – shock absorbers in 4WD are demanded more which means that they can be damaged more easily. Constant compression ad extension cycles will often cause the shock absorbers to overheat more frequently. Premature failures with this system are common and repairing these defects are needed.
- Clutch – the clutches in a 4WD are designed to handle the constant need of driving off-road. If the car is built with a clutch which is not suited to off-road driving then they can fail and break more easily. Repairing or replacing the clutch with a better suited clutch are performed on the 4WD.
- Timing Belt – failures with the timing belts are common when people do not replace them after 120,000 – 150,000km. When driven in extremely dusty or wet environments the timing belts can be overworked. Not undergoing the needed maintenance on the timing belts can often lead to a costly repair or replacement.
- Contaminate Fuels – driving in areas such as contaminated waters or polluted air can lead to the fule becoming blocked. If fuel filters are not installed then 4WD can struggle removing these contaminants and debris causing clogs and choke points.
