Not all rides are comfortable and smooth sailing. There are drives when both the driver and passengers will unexpectedly deal with an overheating engine, busted lights or flat tyres. The latter is among the most common car problem experienced in city drives, outback trips and road trips for all vehicle types. Here at Peninsula Auto Clinic our passionate Northern Beaches mechanics are here to help with some useful flat tyre tips and tricks, such as how to know if the tyre has the correct pressure and whether it is safe to drive.

Can You Drive a Short Distance with a Flat Tyre?

Yes, but it all depends on which tyre your vehicle is using. Several car manufacturers have built-in a feature in their cars that allows driving them for a short distance to get to a petrol station or an auto shop. BMW, for example, has the so-called “Run-flat tyres” feature. This feature allows the driver to keep the vehicle moving with a punctured and deflating tyre. These tyres come with stronger sidewalls. Commonly enforced with steel, it remains intact after being punctured to allow the driver to reach a service centre for a tyre replacement or repair.

While it offers great convenience when the tyre gets punctured, it also has some downsides. It is significantly more expensive, with it being about 25% more, compared to normal ones. While it reduces the vehicle’s running weight, this special tyre’s construction impacts ride quality. For those who wish to keep driving with a flat tyre, our mechanics recommend a maximum speed limit of 80 kilometres per hour.

How To Check Tyre Pressure?

Checking the tyre pressure before a drive is the best preventive measure to avoid having a flat tyre in the middle of nowhere. It could be done at home or in a service station. When doing the latter, there’s a device for checking and inflating the tyre. This equipment usually sits away from the petrol pumps and comes with a sign identifying it.

For car owners unsure about the right amount of pressure for their vehicle, car manufacturers indicate the recommended pressure in the car manual. There are also vehicles where a sticker is attached to the car body indicating the correct pressure for the tyres.

These steps ensure car owners accurately check their tyre pressure:

Remove the valve cap by unscrewing it from the tyre.

Using a pressure gauge or the hose of an automatic air compressor, attach any of those pieces of equipment to the valve.

The tyre pressure is commonly displayed on the automatic air compressor’s display or the attached metre in the pressure gauge.

How Often Should You Pump Up Tyres?

Our mona vale mechanics recommend checking your car’s tyre pressure at least once a month. We recommend having it assessed when the tyres are cold, usually during the early hours of the morning before taking it for a drive. We also recommend checking the tyres cold as it provides an accurate reading of inflation pressures. This pressure usually goes up when the tyres warm up.

If the tyres do not meet the recommended pressure, it is best to fill them up quickly. Using an automatic air compressor depends from one services station to another, but these steps usually help fill up the tyre using an air compressor:

Unscrew the valve cap from the tyre.

Attach the air compressor’s hose to the valve. It is best to apply pressure on the hose to ensure air does not escape while filling the tyre.

For manual air compressors, press the lever to start refilling the tyre. On the other hand, simply holding down and applying pressure on the hose is all it takes when using an automatic air compressor. This device will let out a sound when it reaches the desired tyre pressure. It is always best to periodically check the pressure when filling up the tyre.

Check the tyre pressure. While air compressors at service stations offer significant help filling the tyres, some devices are not calibrated and may not provide an accurate measurement. Our mechanics recommend having a tyre pressure gauge on hand to double-check the tyre pressure.

It is best to fill up the tyres when it is cold. For cars driven more than two kilometres and with hot tyres, mechanics recommend increasing the pressure by 20 to 50 kPA.

Can You Drive For 5 Kilometres with a Flat Tyre?

It is dangerous to continue driving with a flat tyre. But continuously driving until reaching a service station or a tyre shop is the only option for some drivers. When the driver finds themself in this situation, our Mona Vale mechanics advise checking whether the vehicle has a punctured or flat tyre. These two cases vary significantly. Knowing which is which helps in coming up with a better decision. Punctured tyres usually come with rapid loss of air as the tyre is being cut or sliced by a sharp object. On the other hand, a flat tyre is a slow leak resulting from issues around tyre beads, leaky tube valves and old or worn tyres.

To answer the question, yes, it is legal to continue driving with a flat tyre. However, it is best to minimise the distance to avoid consequences associated with driving with a flat or punctured tyre.

Choose Sydney’s Top Northern Beaches Mechanic Now!

For over 25 years, our team has been helping car owners have a functioning vehicle before going on any type of drive.
Owning an electric vehicle (EV) has some fantastic benefits. With rising petrol prices, the convenience of charging it at home or the nearest charging station to you helps keep transportation costs down. However just like with everything in life, some disadvantages also come with having one of these vehicles. Range and the lack of charging spots are among those that easily come into mind. While the auto industry is working hard to address these limitations, these factors and more significantly impact the driving experience in an electric car.
We have witnessed first hand the trend of EV charging hit Sydney. We have spoken to electricians who regularly carry out ev charging installations daily, which more often than not involve upgrading your switchboard to a 3 phase switchboard. Based on our professional experience the most common issues with EVs are charging times, home set up costs, range and expensive components

Common EV Issues and Limitations

Like most general motor cars, electric vehicles also come with their own set of limitations. These downsides are something car owners should be aware of before purchasing an EV. These limitations might affect how they use their car and their expectations of the driving experience it brings.

The following are usual issues and limitations of an EV:

Charging time – The time it takes for an EV to charge is a significant factor that could make or break the full experience of driving an electric car. While it only takes a couple of minutes to refill petrol, it usually takes about 15 minutes to 48 hours to recharge an EV. The type of charger impacts the duration needed to juice up this vehicle. The answer to this shortcoming is to install an EV charger at home. This piece of equipment helps keep the car battery charged overnight. With a handy charger at the garage, it ensures that it is ready to be driven in the morning or any time the driver needs it.

Cost – As well as the upfront costs, installing a EV charger at home will require you to upgrade your current electricity supply through switchboard upgrade which can lead to additional and unexpected costs both upfront and through recurring energy bills.

Battery fires – While EVs have fewer chances of catching fire, it is harder to extinguish a battery fire if it happens. Larger amounts of water and even a special fire extinguisher may be needed when electric cars catch fire. On the bright side, these vehicles also take longer to catch fire compared to ICE vehicles. It means more time for the driver and his passengers to get a safe distance from the EV.

No standard plug – The inability of the automotive industry to come up with a standard plug for electric cars is another problem with these vehicles. Several adapters are currently used by EVs, including Type 1 AC, Type 2 AC or the Mennekes plug, CCS2 (Combined Charging System), CHAdeMO and the proprietary Tesla plug. The lack of a standard also means it is a challenge to find a compatible charging port.

Not a 100% “green” vehicle – Unless your EV charger is using a solar panel like that from Tesla, these cars are not 100% carbon neutral. Some EV charging stations still get power from traditional energy grids, including those power plants that emit carbon dioxide.

Range – The term “range anxiety” has been commonly associated with owning an EV. It refers to the fear of finding oneself in the middle of nowhere without battery juice and no charging station in sight. While Tesla has a wide range of EV charging stations in the US, it is not the same for Australia. Finding yourself with a low battery can lead to a disaster.

Temperature-sensitive batteries – Extreme temperatures also crucially affect the way EVs perform. These batteries cannot be too hot or too cold as such temperatures can quickly degrade the lifespan of the car battery and its expected range.

What Are The Electrical Problems Affecting EVs?

EVs can suffer from several electric issues, which include:

Failing temperature sensors

Faulty display screens

Malfunctioning exterior lights

Battery issues

The car is not the only one that can experience electrical issues. For car owners who own an EV charger, their property can also suffer from the consequences of having an improperly installed charger. Working only with highly skilled electricians when installing an EV charger at home. Professional electricians have the know-how on preparing the property for the energy demand of this equipment and how the building can remain safe from hazards associated with its use.

What Are Some Maintenance Issues with Electric Cars?

Electric cars also need maintenance. While their needs differ from that of a regular car, regular upkeep is a must to have them running smoothly. The following maintenance issues are commonly observed in EVs:

Quick depleting battery

Be mindful of car battery temperature

Know the difference between daily drives and long road trips

Use regenerative braking

Regularly replace coolant

Tyre maintenance

Maintain EV gearbox

Have an expert check the EV’s motor routinely

Aside from maintaining your EV, EV chargers also need regular upkeep. Those who own a Tesla should work with a tesla ev installation electrician team possessing the necessary experience and skills to install, maintain and repair wall connectors sold by the manufacturer.

Choose the Top Mechanic in Sydney Today!

EVs are not something we specialise here at Peninsula Auto Clinic, but we can recommend specialist mechanics who have the skills to attend to the unique needs of this car. Every component of the vehicle can suffer from an issue that impacts the car’s performance.

Based on our professional experience, the following issues are among the most usual car owners encounter:

Rust – With age, rusting will surely impact the integrity of the vehicle’s body and its components. Salt from the ocean or deicing the roads contributes significantly to this issue. Driving on a winter road, when covered with corrosive salt and sand, is another significant contributor to this problem.

Flat car battery – Breaking down due to a flat car battery is one of the most preventable car problems. Leaving the light on or a door ajar is common reason behind the battery dying unexpectedly. In some cases, a dead battery is a result of worn terminals and clamp connections.

Tyre blowout – Getting a flat tyre is not something one can predict or at times, prevent. Common factors behind this problem are the following:

Failing to keep the tyres properly inflated

Failing to keep the tyres balanced and aligned

Not rotating the tyres

Overheating engine – An overheated engine is most common during hot summer days. With extreme temperatures becoming more common, it is not surprising to experience an overheated engine. The good news is drivers can prevent such an issue with these simple steps:

Assessing and fixing leaks

Checking and topping the level of the coolant

Turning down the air-conditioning

Oil Changes – Neglecting to regularly change the car’s oil causes sludging. What was supposed to be a small and inexpensive car service has resulted in a costly repair that could total hundreds of dollars.

Worn brake rotors – Having the brake malfunction can happen even without signs. Brake pads commonly cause this issue. This car part is exposed to friction and is responsible for slowing down the vehicle when the brake is stepped on. With the pads worn down, the brake rotor is subjected to more heat caused by friction which could result in faster wearing. This problem is typically more common in urban areas where there are repeated stop and start instances, in comparison to more rural roads and highways.

Which Cars Brands Have The Least Maintenance Problems?

For car owners who hate or just don’t have the time to tend to regular visits to an auto shop for a car inspection, there are car models and brands that promise the least maintenance needs. These are among cars that require less maintenance or when it does, car inspection costs would not put a dent in the wallet:

Toyota

Mitsubishi

Alfa Romeo

Range Rover

Mercedes

BMW

Honda

Subaru

What Happens If The Car Key Battery Dies?

Preventing car problems requires a couple of actions. The great thing about investing in your car’s health is it decreases the chances of finding oneself in the middle of nowhere and a malfunctioning car. Our expert mechanics recommend doing these things to prevent common car problems:

Regularly check the tyres – The tyre regularly making contact with the road can cause several problems. A bald tyre can cause blowouts out of nowhere. The good thing is it could be prevented with some simple steps. Using a pressure gauge allows the driver to have a snapshot of the tyre’s condition. The tyre pressure should match the manufacturer’s recommended level, which can be easily seen in the manual. It is also best to double-check the tyre treads and the overall state of the tyres. When there’s something unusual with its form or how drives have been, it is best to visit a trusted Northern Beaches mechanic after refueling the air at your local servo.

Check the fluids – Most car owners and drivers usually do not mind the fluids enabling the vehicle to move. However, having fresh, properly levelled fluid plays a significant role in ensuring a safe and comfortable driving experience. The brake fluid, radiator fluid and other oils should be checked every time taking the vehicle for a drive, regardless of whether it is a short or long journey.

Drive sensibly – How drivers use the car impacts the overall state of the vehicle. While regular maintenance is a must, it also helps that the driver takes good care of how he steers or brakes. Driving smoothly lessens the stress experienced by the vehicle, thus reduces the chances of experiencing problems.

Act promptly – When signs of leaks or the brake pad malfunctions, it is best to bring the car immediately to a trusted Mona Vale mechanic. Immediate repairs prevent simple issues from developing into bigger and more costly repairs.

Routine vehicle inspections – We are not talking about bringing the car weekly to a mechanic. Simply checking fluids, tyres, and the vehicle’s body can help detect possible issues and have them resolved when it is still in its early stages. You should book your car in for a service at least once every 10,000 kms or 6 months.

Contact The Northern Beaches Leading Local Mechanic Today!

Car owners who want the most experienced and trained mechanic to fix their car problems can always trust Peninsula Auto Clinic to provide one. In modern push start cars, a flat key battery is the most common reason as to why your car is not initiating when pressing the “engine on” button. However in some cases, it could be due to a flat battery or faulty internal system.

Why Use a Car Key Fob?

The car key remote fobs offer great convenience for new car owners. This RFID-powered device removes the need to put the key into the sockets Some of these require the car owner to press a button to open the door. Some varieties require the driver to pass the fob in front of the electronic lock to have the door open.

Aside from convenience, key fobs also come with other advantages. These benefits are among the most common reasons car owners prefer using a key fob:

Security – While it could also be easily lost like a traditional car key, the advantage of having a key fob is that it could be remotely deactivated when it went missing.

Reliability – A high-quality RFID key fob offers a dependable and long-lasting solution over copied keys for the car.

Reprogramming – Having a key fob also offers the ease of replacing a key when misplaced. Owners can have it locked when this happens. It is also easy to get a replacement key fob and have it reprogrammed to fit the receiver unit in the car.

Battery – By being battery-powered, it is easy to maintain car key fobs. Most of these devices even offer long battery life before the need to replace the batteries arise. Depending on car type, we recommend changing your car key’s battery at least once every year

Factors Behind Car Key Fobs’ Battery Not Working?

The most common reasons why your car key’s FOB is not working are as follows:

Dead battery – Check the battery and replace it when needed. Most key fobs use category four button cell batteries. However, it is still best to check the key fob’s manual to confirm which battery is best for the device. You can also open the battery compartment and check the batteries. The type of battery used is usually indicated on its surface and depending on the model of the car, you can purchase replacement batteries from service stations and battery shops

Broken contacts – Take the key fob apart and check for broken contacts or misaligned buttons. Due to wear and tear, it is not surprising to find broken contacts or buttons that are misaligned. If the battery terminal is the problem, anyone can easily determine that it is why the key fob is not working. When it is not the battery terminals, it could be a misaligned button that’s causing the issue.

Reprogramming – Reprogramming is a must when the device can no longer communicate with the receiver unit installed in the vehicle. It is the only way for car owners to use their key fob. The good news is that this repair can be done either by the car owner himself through DIY-ing, or have a professional do it.

Defective key fob – When all of those mentioned above as been exhausted, it could be time to find a car key fob replacement.

What Happens If The Car Key Battery Dies?

Most car brands will still allow you to unlock your car as more often than not, there is a physical key located in the fob. You can also still start the car by pushing your key fob against the push start button to ignite the engine. Most push start cars have a chip that will work when pressed against the engine’s button.

For those already driving, a low or dead-battery key fob does not impact the car’s performance. Key fobs are mostly used to unlock the doors and start the car, so they would not cause any significant interruption.

Can You Still Drive The Car With a Dead Car Key Fob?

Yes, it is still possible to drive the vehicle even with a dead car key fob. It is also easy to do it. These are the steps to drive a vehicle without a working key fob:

First, the car owner needs to go inside their car. He can do this by using the key included in the key fob. Next, he needs to put the key into the keyhole to open the door. This action will trigger the alarm, but there is no reason to panic.

Once inside the car, the driver only needs to push the “start engine” button using the dead key fob.

Contact the Top Northern Beaches Mechanic Now!

Car owners who need more assistance than changing the batteries in their key fob can count on our Mona Vale mechanics. For over two decades, we have been helping car owners on the Northern Beaches with common issues affecting their vehicles.
There’s something about the “new car” smell that we all want to linger on for years. A regular visit to the carwash is key to having a fresh-smelling car. However, some circumstances can trigger foul smells to spread inside a freshly cleaned car. Several factors could be behind how there are foul smells in the car interior.

Common Bad Odour in Cars and What Causes Them

A bad smell has no place in any car and can also be an indication of a deeper problem affecting your vehicle. The following are common reasons behind a smelly car interior:

Burning rubber – A burning rubber odour inside the car is a clear sign that there is something wrong. This smell could be coming from a loosened rubber hose or the belt under the hood. At times, the burning smell can also be from an oil or fluid leak, or a damaged or worn-out drive belt.

Exhaust smell – Exhaust fumes can also slip inside the car. When this happens, it indicates that there is leaking in the exhaust system or that the vehicle’s windows or doors are poorly sealed. Our mona vale mechanics recommend quickly getting into the root cause of why the car interior reeks of exhaust fumes. Leaving an odour inside can cause serious health hazards

Musty-smelling car air conditioning – Excessive moisture is usually to blame for a sour or musty-smelling vehicle. If this smell lingers inside the car, it is best to have an expert take a look and do the appropriate repair. Prolonging can lead to health issues due to mouldy air. A mechanic with years of experience dealing with car air conditioning systems can provide the best assistance in determining which factor is causing the sour or musty odour.

Rotten egg smell – If no one has been eating boiled eggs or there are no stored eggs inside the car, a problem with the vehicle’s fuel system could be the reason behind the rotten egg smell. A damaged or worn-out catalytic converter, fuel filters and fuel pressure sensors are common causes behind this issue as it lets sulphur gas leak into the cabin.

Smells like gas – A gas-like smell is a common odour after a trip to the petrol station. However, it is best to check each corner of the vehicle if it continues to linger for days. If this is the case, the odour is likely an indication of an issue with the gas cap, or a leaky fuel tank or injector.

Other unusual smells – Burning smells do not just come from loose belts. It could also be due to a burned-out electric fuse, an overheating A/C compressor or worn-out brake pads. In some cases, burning plastic is also experienced in cars. When there’s an unusual smell inside the cabin, it is always best to bring the car to a trusted Northern Beaches mechanic.

DIY Fixes for Foul Bad Car Smells

It is always best to get into the root of the issue to eliminate bad odours in cars. However, cars that usually have a funky smell need not be abandoned. Several, albeit with some being temporary, DIY fixes are available to remove foul smells inside the car. Here are the most recommended approaches to get rid of this odour:

Baking soda – Sodium bicarbonate has been among the most useful products known to man. It is also simple to use and very effective in dealing with bad odours, and believe it or not – clearing blocked drains. All a car owner needs to do is clean the car before sprinkling baking soda all over the vehicle’s interior. Once fully covered with baking soda, vacuuming comes after the car interior has been soaked for at least an hour.

Carpet cleaner – If it is a leaking clutch fluid or you stepped on the gas after filling up the tank, a carpet cleaner is the best DIY to remove the smell. A specialised product should be used in cleaning. Utilising the proper product helps achieve the expected outcome quickly.

Charcoal – Charcoal is nature’s toxin absorber. It is commonly used in water filters but is also effective in cleaning the air. Car owners can maximise what it offers by placing a bag of charcoal briquettes and leaving it inside the car overnight. Activated charcoal absorbs anything floating in the air due to its porous nature.

Vinegar – Vinegar is best for removing overpowering smells. Like using charcoal, it is also easy to use it to remove foul smells. Car owners only need to leave a small cup of vinegar inside the car overnight. The evaporation of vinegar limits the spread of strong odours. For those who want the scent of vinegar to stick around, it could also be sprayed but it must be diluted with water.

Air fresheners – When you want a fresh-smelling vehicle, an air freshener is always the answer!

Who Can Fix It?

A mechanic with years of experience can provide the biggest assistance in this case. Given that the foul odour is caused by a malfunctioning car component, they can have it diagnosed and repaired in no time. These professionals have spent years or even decades providing car service or car repair to thousands of vehicles of all kinds and brands.

Contact the Top Northern Beaches Mechanic Now!

At Peninsula Auto Clinic, we have years of experience dealing with all issues affecting cars.
With more and more people becoming concerned about climate change and increasing fuel emissions, there is an increasing demand for electric vehicles (EVs). These cars offer an eco-friendly way to drive around coupled with the latest advancements in automotive technology. Although Tesla ev installation chargers may have initially led the charge, all major car brands are now beginning to add ev’s and hybrid models to their product line .EVs are still smaller numbers compared to traditional petrol-powered cars. However, forecasts predict that they may soon be head-to-head to the number of petrol cars within the coming years, especially with the rising fuel prices. Aside from being powered by batteries, they function the same way as other vehicles plying the roads of Sydney. Given they share the same functions as the last car you owned, electric cars also need the same care and attention which require the expertise of a specialised EV mechanic. Our Mona Vale Mechanics here at Peninsula Auto Clinic are not EV mechanics as of yet, however we do work on Hybrid cars and if you require the expertise of a EV mechanic, we will be happy to recommend some great options.

Do EV Motors Need Maintenance?

Yes they require the same attention to detail through servicing received by vehicles running on petrol. However, they require mechanics specialising in tending to the unique needs of an EV. Working with a mechanic with the experience and knowledge of the inner workings of an electric car is a must. While they seem to drive like any traditional vehicle, the components responsible for operating the car significantly differ from that of a petrol-powered car. Many of these vehicles come with fewer parts compared to conventional cars. The company you purchased your EV from will give you clear instructions on how regular maintenance is required, however a general rule of thumb is approximately once a year or every 15,000km driven. The electric motor used in these vehicles differentiates it from that of a petrol-powered car’s engine. The electric motor found in these types of vehicles does not require spark plugs, leads, engine filters or belts. The absence of these components means less maintenance is required for such vehicles. However, regular maintenance is still required as the electric motor and battery is still exposed to external elements such as excessive dust, vibration and hot or cold temperatures. You will also require inspections from an electrician for your ev charger installation at home.

What Are The Car Services Required by an Electric Car?

Besides ensuring a properly functioning motor, other components of the EV must also be in tip-top shape. These are some components that require regular car inspection:

Battery checkup – The battery is the most important part of an EV. Commonly lithium-based, this is the same battery type powering smartphones. It usually comes with a serviceable life of over a decade. Proper car battery maintenance is necessary to achieve this guarantee, as this kind of battery can start to degrade over time, which results in a reduced distance range between charges.

Brake service – Many electric cars come with regenerative braking. As it is rarely used, it is expected to give the brake pad a lifespan of over 25,000 kilometres.

Tyre service – Over-pressure and wear and tear are common issues plaguing tyres in EVs. Tyres in this vehicle tend to wear out faster compared to traditional vehicles. The car’s weight is responsible for this as the vehicle is heavier compared to petrol-powered vehicles.

Wiper blades, windshield wipers and washer fluid – Just like a petrol-powered vehicle, every component of EVs also will require attention. For wiper blades, regular checking can determine whether there is a need for replacement. Owners should also regularly inspect the level of their washer fluid.

How Often Does an EV Need to be Serviced?

Vehicles powered by rechargeable batteries require less overall maintenance compared to cars running on petrol. But it does not mean that EV car owners should not bring their vehicles to a highly specialised ev mechanic. It is still recommended to book in an annual car service for EVS. These vehicle inspections aim to ensure a functioning brake system, tyres and wipes, among other components.

Costs of EV Car Inspection

EV owners worried that they won’t get enough savings from this investment need not worry about car maintenance. The fewer parts needing regular maintenance makes it easier and cheaper to check the roadworthiness of an EV.

However, the cost associated with a vehicle inspection or car repair is still dependent on the brand, size, vehicle age and technology. For example, the cost of maintaining an electric car from Hyundai will be lower compared to that needed to service a BMW electric vehicle.

Choose the Best Northern Beaches Mechanic in Sydney Today!

While we do not offer services for electric vehicles, our team has been helping deal with issues and maintenance required by petrol-powered cars for years to Northern Beaches residents. We also advise letting a professional take a look through a car service before

driving after being parked for a long time for safety reasons.

The Common Issues For Cars That Are Not Regularly Used

There are many different reasons that cause car owners to leave their vehicles unused for months or even longer. While there are several explanations, all vehicles suffer similar consequences when not used for weeks. Cars left in the garage for a long time can significantly impact every part. These are usual issues that sprung due to cars not being regularly used:

Flat Batteries: A flat battery is the common cause for a neglected vehicle. Main reason being is that the power depletes as it is still being used when not driven. A battery can last approx 4 weeks to 2 months without being driven before it becomes flat.

Flat tyres – Tyres can get warped, flat or depleted when a vehicle is left in the garage or parking lot for a long time. When driving the vehicle after months of not using it, our Mona Vale mechanics recommend checking the tyre’s air pressure. We also advise checking for bubbles in the tyre as it could cause a blowout when driving around.

Bad brake and rotor – Rusting is a common issue for cars remaining idle for a long period. After detecting rust on the brake, rotor and any component, it is best to send the car to a trusted mechanic for a brake service. Skilled professionals have the skills to provide the best solution to this problem.

Contaminated oil – Fuels do go bad. For unleaded fuel, it usually goes bad in 3 to 6 months, while it takes about 6 to 12 months for diesel. Car owners can check if the oil has already become viscous. Having this kind of oil spells big trouble for the fuel pump. If this is the case, it is best to remove the fuel or have it done by an experienced mechanic.

Damaged vehicle bodies – For cars parked for a long time under the scorching sun, they could be heavily damaged by external factors. Heavy rainfall and other extreme weather and temperature could cause paint to wear down and expose the vehicle’s body to rust. It could also cause cracks and other serious damage.

Infestation – Aside from having a damaged vehicle body, leaving a car unattended for a long time can result in spiders, mice and other pest infestations. It does not matter if the vehicle is in a closed garage or an open parking lot. We recommend keeping the vehicle covered when leaving it unused for days or even months.

Impact of an Unused Vehicle on the Car Battery

A dead battery is the most usual consequence of failing to regularly start a vehicle. The battery can die as soon as 4 weeks after the car has been left unused for days. A car battery dying is the result of the electronic components continuously working despite it being parked for a long time. This repercussion is why mechanics strongly recommend starting the car at least once a week and letting it run for about five to ten minutes.

Mechanic Recommendations When Leaving a Car Unused for Months

Our experts recommend doing these things to prepare a car when it will not be used for a long time:

Add fuel stabiliser – The good news is that there are products that could be used to keep fuel fresh for up to two years. These products help keep gasoline from degrading and damaging other components.

Charge the car battery – Hooking the battery up to the correct charger helps prevent dead batteries. There are two kinds of car battery chargers available – one for use for discharged batteries and the other for charged batteries.

Wash the vehicle – Removing dirt is still a must, even when not regularly using the car. Dirt and other contaminants can contribute to rusting and paint damage. For those living in an area where rust is common (especially near the ocean on the Northern Beaches), it is best to have a vehicle undercoating or other rust protection.

Keep it covered – Infestation of spiders and other pests is higher when the car is uncovered. Cars not parked in a closed garage are also exposed to external factors like sun and rain. For owners parking their vehicles in an open space, it is best to invest in a car cover to keep it protected from external factors such as weather and rodents.

Add fresh fluids – Our Mona Vale mechanics recommend changing the fluids before parking it for a long time. Leaving used engine oil, brake fluid, and power steering fluid undisturbed for months can cause damaging consequences to the components. Having new fluids can help prevent these issues from sprouting.

Put it on blocks – Using jack stands significantly helps prevent tyre issues after months of not using the car. This method takes the weight off the tyres and helps avoid deformation.

Do not engage the parking brake – Using the parking brake is a must in every situation. However, mechanics do not recommend using it when the car will be left unused for an extended period of time. Engaging the parking brake can fuse with the drum or rotor due to rusting. You can block or wheel chock to prevent the vehicle from rolling.

Contact the Top Northern Beaches Mechanic for Car Service and Repairs Today!

Here at Peninsula Auto Clinic, our Mona Vale mechanics are always ready to help.
A cracked windscreen dramatically increases the chances of drivers getting into an accident. When you notice a crack, it is best to slow down and park the vehicle to assess the damage. If the crack is bigger than a 1 dollar coin, then you should immediately get assistance. This is an indication that your windshield will need to be replaced. Furthermore, if the crack is located at the center of the driver’s windscreen vision, then you should not drive your car until you have a professional repair the crack. If the crack is smaller than a $1 coin and not obscuring the driver’s direct vision, then your windshield may not need to be replaced entirely and you may be able to use a windscreen chip repair kit . We always recommend consulting a professional before carrying out any DIY repairs yourself.

Your first point of call should be to your local insurance provider such as NRMA. If windscreen cracks are not covered under your policy then you can seek alternative replacement and repair options such as a local and mobile windscreen replacement professional. Please note, here at Peninsula Auto Clinic, we do not offer windscreen replacement services, however our Northern Beaches Mechanics can recommend some fantastic local repairers who will not charge you a ridiculous markup!

The Function of a Windscreen

The car windscreen plays an important part in any vehicle. This glass in front of the car gives the driver and passengers a clear view of the road ahead. Most windscreens are made of laminated safety glass bonded by a urethane sealant.

The windscreen is in charge of the following:

Clear vision – As previously mentioned, this glass allows the driver to have a full view of the roads. An unobstructed view helps the driver keep the car, himself and his passengers from road accidents.

Protective shield – It also acts as a shield. This protection is not only for the driver and his passengers but also blocks external factors like stones, bugs, dirt and other debris from entering the vehicle.

Proper deployment of airbags – The piece of equipment also inflates airbags when they are most needed. The windscreen acts as the backstop for airbags when they safeguard the driver and his passengers. It is also responsible for absorbing the impact on airbags.

Safety – Aside from protecting the passengers, the windscreen also provides 40% structural strength to the car roof.
