Why Do My Tyres Squeak While Driving?

A squeaking sound while driving is one of those annoying issues that gets under your skin quickly. You drop the window while cruising down Pittwater Road, and every turn or speed hump comes with a sharp, chirping noise. Before assuming you need four brand-new tyres, it helps to understand what is actually rubbing under the wheel arches.

When the Squeal Happens During Tight Turns

If the squeak sounds like a basketball shoe squeaking on a polished court, you are hearing friction between the tyre rubber and the tarmac. This usually happens during low-speed parking manoeuvres or when taking tight roundabouts.

Two main factors cause this rubber scuffing:

  • Under-inflated tyres: Low pressure causes the tyre shoulder to collapse slightly, forcing the tread blocks to drag rather than roll cleanly. Checking your pressures monthly stops this lateral tyre scrub.
  • Wheel alignment out of spec: If kerb impacts or rough roads have knocked your front wheel geometry out, the tyres are constantly fighting each other. One tyre is effectively dragging across the road, creating a continuous squeal and rapidly scrubbing away the inner tread edge.

When the Squeak Clunks Over Speed Humps

If the noise sounds less like dragging rubber and more like a dry, creaking door hinge when driving over speed humps or rough patches, the tyres aren’t at fault at all. The culprit is almost always dry suspension bushes.

Rubber control arm bushes isolate road noise and allow suspension arms to pivot smoothly. Around the Northern Beaches, constant exposure to salt air and fine beach sand strips away internal lubricants. As sand works inside the rubber mounting points, every bump causes dry metal-on-rubber friction.

When the Squeak Changes When You Touch the Brakes

Modern brake pads feature tiny built-in metal tabs known as acoustic wear indicators. When the friction material wears down to its safety limit, this tab lightly touches the steel brake rotor. It is deliberately designed to make a high-pitched squeal to alert you before metal-on-metal grinding destroys the brake disc entirely.
