Steps in Changing the Car’s Tyre

When a car tyre replacement is needed it is quite simple to have it completed successfully. Being careful, following the steps and being safe at all times is important in a car tyre change.

Tools Needed in the Process

Most modern cars will already come with the needed tools to have the tyre replaced. If these tools are easily available then the tyre change will be quite simple:

  • Spare Tyre
  • Jack
  • Wheel Brace

10 Steps For a Car’s Tyre Replacement

  1. Finding a Safe Location

It is important if the tyre becomes flat or experiences any other problem then slowly drive to a safe location. Such as an area where there are no passing cars, the place should be flat and sturdy as well. Furthermore, placing the car in park with the handbrake up is needed, along with the hazard lights.

  1. Loosening the Wheel Nuts with One Turn

If there are hubcaps on the tyre, which are most likely clipped on, then remove it from the tyre. Furthermore, with the wheel brace have each wheel nut loosen through completing a full anti-clockwise turn. If it is difficult, use your foot of body weight to give more force to the turn.

  1. Placing the Jack Underneath the Car

With each wheel nut being loosened, follow the car’s manual to see where the best place to have the jack be. Usually, this point is underneath the car’s frame which is alongside the damaged tyre.

  1. Raising the Car

With the jack in its needed position, wind the tool to have the car raised. The car should be raised until there is a gap of around 5-10 cm from the road and the tyre.

  1. Removing All Wheel Nuts

Once the car has been raised the wheel nuts should be completely removed from the tyre. Also, it is important to place the wheel nuts in a safe location to ensure they do not get lost.

  1. Replacing the Old Tyre with the Spare

Replacing the old tyre should begin by firstly removing the damaged tyre slowly. Once it has been removed, placing it below the car adds for additional support. With the spare tyre, have it aligned with the wheel holes before having it placed onto the wheel hub.

  1. Putting the Wheel Nuts on Again

Using your hands, screw the wheel nuts into its original place making sure it is tight.

  1. Lowering the Car then Tightening the Wheel Nuts

Have the old tyre removed from under the car to then wind the jack down so the new tyre sits on the floor. With the new tyre taking on the car’s weight, remove the jack and tighten the wheel nuts fully with the wheel brace.

  1. Placing the Hubcap On Again

If there was a hubcap included, either store it in the boot or place it onto the new tyre.

  1. Putting Away the Equipment

Once these steps are completed, put away all the remaining equipment and tools. Also, perform a small test by slowly driving making sure the wheel is on properly.

Space Saver Tyre – Emergency Spares

If replacing the old tyre with a space saver tyre then they are designed to only last a short distance. Often yellow in colour, this tyre will only handle speeds of below 80km/h and can limit steering and braking. Therefore, having this temporary tyre replaced as soon as possible is important, done through a professional mechanic.

The Importance of Tyre Maintenance

Tyres are one of the most important features of a car and should be healthy at all times. Regular maintenance either through a Car Service or other specific tasks are crucial, these can include:

  • Checking the Pressure – having the tyres on the right air pressure will allow the tyre to be strong and sturdy. Car services will cover this by ensuring that the tyre is at the right pressure through either deflating or inflating.
  • Monitoring the Tread – it is important to have the tread of the tyre monitored to see if they have worn down yet. A mechanic can test this, furthermore, purchasing a new tyre may be needed.
  • Tyre Rotations – rotating the tyres are important to keep the wear even on all sides of the tyre.
