How Are Mechanical Problems Diagnosed?

A mechanic diagnosis involves a  mechanic carrying out a number of tests to identify a  suspected problem with your car in efficient times.  Mechanics have the skills and tools to quickly diagnose these problems regardless of their severity. Here at Peninsula Auto Clinic, our car diagnostic tests involve our licensed team inspecting and diagnosing any car’s problems.

During a mechanic diagnosis test, there are many different tools that a mechanic will use to find defects. Some of these include

  • 12v Test Light – used to find any electrical issue within the car
  • Stethoscope – a specific tool made so mechanics can hear potential problems in systems
  • Timing Light – used to determine if the engine is igniting enough power
  • Vacuum Gauge – a gauge which will be read to identify the air pressure of the engine
  • Fuel Pressure Gauge – a gauge that reads the fuel pressure levels of the car
  • Car Code Reader – looks over the car’s computer and find any codes suggesting potential problems
  • Scan Tool – code readers with additional features, such as viewing graphs and troubleshooting

How Do Mechanics Diagnose Car Problems?

After training to become a mechanic, gaining their Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Diagnosis and becoming fully certified, mechanics are able to easily identify specific mechanical issues. The most common ways that a mechanic will find and diagnose specific car problems are:

12v Test Light

The main places in which the 12v test light will be used are on the alternator, fuses, fuel injectors and many more systems. A blown fuse within the car is checked by placing specific parts on certain places and probing the fuse. A light will switch on with the test light tool that signifies that the fuse is working. By connecting the tool to a certain electrical component it will test and clearly indicate potential problems to the mechanic.

Stethoscope

A mechanical stethoscope will help a mechanic hear inside the engine clearly to identify a fault. Hearing inside the transmission system, rear axle and many other systems helps with hearing noises which indicate potential problems. Parts grinding, water pump failures to worn gears will be found by using the stethoscope.

Timing Light

A mechanic will use a timing light tool to look at how effectively and efficiently the engine ignites. This tool will read the pulse of the spark which was created when the engine ignites power. A timing gun will sense and read the electrical charge which a mechanic will read to determine if the engine is powering correctly. Some timing lights will need to be connected to the spark plugs while others just need to be pointed at the system. These tools are helpful if the car does not start properly or at all and are easy to use.

Vacuum Gauge

When checking the air pressure of the car and the engine’s performance a vacuum gauge will help. This gauge will have specific readings which a mechanic will read and know if the air pressure of the car is not correct. With the readings, the mechanic will know the exact ways to fix the problem, from too low or high pressure or leaks in the system.

Fuel Pressure Gauge

It is important that there is enough fuel in the car for it to function properly. No fuel pressure will lead to the engine not working and low pressure can also cause the car to drive incorrectly. The gauge is attached to the fuel hose and a mechanic will know if the car is either low or high in its fuel pressure. To prevent black smoke, low performance or excessive fuel consumption, a mechanic will need to read the gauge efficiently.

Car Code Reader

A car reader tool will look over the car’s computer and detect any warning or report codes. The tool when plugged into the car monitors the outputs and inputs of the car’s computer, reading every single code. When it notices a code which is not aligned with others then it indicates a fault or trouble with the car. A mechanic will know how to read the code and figure out what defect is being experienced with the car.

Scan Tool

Scan tools are able to read codes like a car code reader however they can also gather more information. The scan tool can store any data found and play it back live while creating graphs if needed. Generic and manufacturer-specific trouble codes can be read along with pending codes. A scan tool will also provide definitions and descriptions of any trouble code found and offer tips if needed. This tool makes it easier to find and diagnose an issue. There are many common car problems that can be easily identified and fixed, we recommend reading our blog for more information.
